This book has good gripping at the start with mad Doctor Rat as central character, then it has strong (view spoiler)[tragic (hide spoiler)]ending. This book had been in my blind spot when I was actively searching good fantasy/science fiction books at my college period. My awareness about the existing of this book was due to GR review of a friend. Jade City won the World Fantasy Award (tied with Victor LaValle's The Changeling) and the Aurora Award, and was a finalist for the Nebula and Locus Awards. Publishers Weekly called the novel "an engaging blend of crime drama and Asian martial arts film tropes" [8] and it received a starred review from Library : Fonda Lee.

Many of his stories hold exciting adventures with a bit of action and drama, but this one makes you think more and focus on what each of the characters inside are trying to tell the readers. A fable à la Beasts () that collapses the dichotomy between man and animal, the novel pits an insane lab rat (Doctor Rat) against the rest of the animal kingdom.

Although a polemic against vivisection and animal cruelty, Doctor Rat succeeds as a scintillating and literary plunge into a world of madcap delusions.
